A man from Gwanda, Zimbabwe, has been charged with murder following the death of his neighbour during a dispute over alcohol payment.

What began as a casual drinking session at Mpala Business Centre on July 9, 2025, turned violent when a disagreement escalated fatally. Bright Ngulube, 48, from the Nhwali area, appeared before Gwanda magistrate Progress Murandu this week, accused of killing his neighbour, Bongani Ncube.

According to court prosecutor Ngonidzashe Shumba, the altercation began after Ngulube joined a group drinking at a local bottle store. Tensions flared when Ncube questioned why Ngulube was consuming alcohol without contributing to the cost.

“The verbal exchange quickly escalated into physical violence,” Shumba told the court. “In a fit of anger, the accused repeatedly struck the victim’s head with his own, leading to fatal injuries.”

Ngulube was not asked to enter a plea during his initial court appearance. Magistrate Murandu remanded him in custody until August 9, 2025, pending further investigations.

The incident has left the Gwanda community in shock and has reignited concerns about alcohol-related violence. Local authorities are urging residents to resolve disputes peacefully and to exercise moderation in alcohol consumption to avoid similar tragedies.
