Michelle Obama has once again addressed persistent rumours about her marriage to former President Barack Obama. Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, the former First Lady made it crystal clear that if there were issues in her relationship, the public would be the first to know.
“If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” she said, during the candid conversation. Turning to her brother and co-host of her own podcast IMO, Craig Robinson, she added, “He would know it. And everybody would know it. I’m not a martyr. I would be problem-solving in public. ‘Let me tell you what he did.’”
Michelle emphasized the strength and longevity of her marriage, saying, “The beauty of my husband and our partnership is that neither one of us was ever going to quit, because that’s not who we are. And I know that about him. He knows that about me.”
Speculation about the Obamas’ relationship intensified earlier this year when Michelle chose to skip several high-profile events, including the January 9 funeral for Jimmy Carter and the January 20 inauguration of President Trump.
But according to Michelle, her decision was personal—not political. “I feel like now I have permission to do what I want to do,” she explained. “I think at 61, I’m finally owning my wisdom. I think it takes women until we’re about 60 to be like, ‘I think I know a thing or two.’”
