Pa Ayodele Adebanjo, a prominent leader of the pan-Yoruba sociocultural group Afenifere, has passed away at the age of 96.
The elder statesman reportedly breathed his last on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement signed by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
The statement read in part: “He passed away peacefully this morning at his home in Lekki, Lagos, at the age of 96. We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His unwavering belief in a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was evident throughout his life, and he remained dedicated to this cause until his final breath.”
A distinguished lawyer, former Organizing Secretary of the Action Group, and the National Leader of Afenifere, Adebanjo leaves behind his wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.4o
