Former U.S. President Donald Trump has strongly criticized a recent ruling by a New York judge, Justice Arthur Engoron, which stated that he had been dishonest about his wealth for an extended period of time. Trump characterized this development as a ‘regrettable day’ for the justice system.
This ruling, seen as a significant setback for the former president, is expected to facilitate the efforts of the state’s Attorney General, Letitia James, in establishing potential damages during an upcoming trial scheduled for October.
New York prosecutors have alleged that Trump deliberately exaggerated property valuations when dealing with lenders while simultaneously reducing these valuations when reporting to tax authorities.
In response to the ruling, Justice Engoron ordered the revocation of certificates that granted certain Trump-owned businesses, including the Trump Organization, the ability to operate in New York. Additionally, he appointed a receiver to oversee the dissolution of these businesses.
The judge provided a detailed account of how Trump, along with his sons Donald Jr. and Eric, the Trump Organization, and other defendants, artificially inflated property valuations and Trump’s net worth to align with their business interests.
Trump took to the Truth Social platform to express his discontent, describing the ruling as ‘a deeply disappointing moment for the New York State justice system.’ He further stated, ‘Today’s decision regarding a company that has contributed significantly to New York State fails to acknowledge the alarming rise in violent crime, including murder, within the state.’
Trump went on to argue, ‘Can you fathom a ruling against me for conducting business with utmost integrity while allowing lawlessness to thrive on the streets of New York? This judicial approach is compelling countless companies to relocate from New York to more hospitable environments, with few showing any inclination to return to the city or state.’
The civil trial is set to commence in October and may extend until the end of the year. Notably, Trump remains a prominent figure in the GOP and leads the Republican presidential nomination race.
