The coach of British boxer Chris Eubank Jr., Brian ‘Bomac’ McIntyre, found himself in a dramatic situation at Manchester Airport on the morning of September 3rd when he was apprehended by armed airport police following the discovery of a firearm in his suitcase, as reported by Mail Sport.
The situation unfolded when security personnel conducting a routine scan of the luggage, which had been checked in for a flight, detected the presence of a firearm. Subsequently, police officers, armed themselves, swiftly descended upon Terminal 2’s departure lounge and took into custody the 53-year-old McIntyre, who was scheduled to travel to Atlanta, on suspicion of possessing a firearm.
McIntyre, a former American boxer, had just overseen Eubank Jr.’s impressive victory over Liam Smith in their middleweight rematch in the city on September 2nd. It is believed that little effort was made to conceal the weapon within the suitcase.
A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Police released a statement, saying, ‘On Sunday, September 3rd, 2023, at approximately 10:45 AM, officers responded to reports of a possible firearm found in checked luggage by airport personnel at Manchester Airport. After initial examination by security staff, GMP officers arrived, seized the firearm, and subsequently arrested a man on charges of firearm possession. He is currently in custody for further questioning.’
The circumstances surrounding how the firearm ended up in the suitcase will be thoroughly investigated by the police.
McIntyre is widely recognized as one of the sport’s top trainers. He has been in the corner for former super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring and prepared Amir Khan for his bout with Kell Brook the previous year. Additionally, McIntyre is the trainer of the renowned American boxer Terence Crawford, both of whom hail from the same Omaha neighborhood and trained at the same gym.
