The Super Eagles of Nigeria have arrived in Moscow, Russia, ahead of their international friendly against the Russian national team on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed that the players and team officials arrived in Russia on Friday as preparations began for the friendly encounter.
The match comes shortly after Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, giving head coach Eric Chelle an opportunity to assess other players and make further adjustments to his squad.
Chelle Names Separate Squad for Russia Friendly
Chelle had previously announced a separate group of players for the Russia friendly rather than using exactly the same squad selected for the AFCON qualifiers.
The decision has provided an opportunity for several players to receive international exposure while the coach continues to assess his options.
Among the players selected for the Russia fixture are goalkeeper Chibuzor Atata, goalkeeper Samuel James, Kelechi Iheanacho and Popoola Abdulrasaq, alongside other squad changes.
The different squad selection also reflects Chelle’s approach of giving opportunities to players while maintaining a wider pool of options for the national team.
Russia Friendly Comes After Difficult AFCON Qualifiers
Nigeria enters the friendly after a mixed September international window.
The Super Eagles opened their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo. George Ilenikhena made his debut in that match, while experienced players including Ola Aina, Samuel Chukwueze and Wilfred Ndidi also featured.
However, Nigeria suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second qualifying match.
The defeat was Chelle’s first since taking charge of the Super Eagles and left Nigeria with three points from its opening two Group L matches. Guinea-Bissau moved to six points after winning both of its opening games.
The Russia friendly therefore provides another competitive test for Chelle and his players.
New Faces Get Opportunity
One of the major talking points surrounding the Russia match is the opportunity for less-established players to show what they can offer.
Chelle has already demonstrated a willingness to introduce new players into the national team setup. George Ilenikhena, for example, was handed his Super Eagles debut against Madagascar.
The coach has also previously made changes to his squads for international friendlies, including introducing players receiving their first call-ups.
The Russia game could provide another opportunity for players competing for places in the national team to make an impression.
What Chelle Will Be Looking For
The friendly is expected to give Chelle an opportunity to examine different combinations and assess the depth of his squad.
The coach will also be looking for improvements in areas where Nigeria struggled during the defeat to Guinea-Bissau, particularly in terms of defensive organisation and overall performance.
However, unlike the AFCON qualifiers, the Russia match is a friendly and will primarily serve as an opportunity for experimentation, evaluation and preparation.
Super Eagles Face Russia on October 6
Nigeria will face Russia on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, in what will be another international test for the Super Eagles.
The encounter will attract attention as Nigeria continues to develop its squad under Chelle and looks ahead to the rest of its international commitments.
With several players competing for places and the coach continuing to assess his options, the match could provide valuable minutes for members of the new-look squad.
The Super Eagles’ arrival in Russia marks the beginning of preparations for another international challenge.
For Chelle, the friendly provides an opportunity to evaluate players, test different combinations and continue building a squad with greater depth.
Nigeria’s players will also have an opportunity to respond on the pitch following the recent defeat to Guinea-Bissau.
The Super Eagles will face Russia on October 6 as attention turns to another chapter in the team’s ongoing rebuilding process.
