A French couple have been arrested after sparking outrage when they were seen having sex on a remote beach in Thailand.
The pair, identified by police as Halan, 24, and Nadia, 24, were reportedly spotted engaging in the act on the sand at Rayee Beach on the holiday island of Phuket on April 10.
Footage appears to show the naked woman on top of her partner as they moved in full view of several stunned passers-by. Shocked locals said the couple showed no regard for other visitors, claiming their loud moaning could be heard across the beach during the brazen act.
Residents also criticised police for not patrolling the area to prevent such incidents.
One local said: “Great, go for it. Because in our country, there are no rules or regulations. It’s shameful. You can do whatever you want. The laws aren’t strict enough.”
Another added: “So many foreigners do this when they come here. They are like animals. I would rather be poor, without any tourists visiting, than live in this environment.”
Following public outrage, officers launched a search for the pair. They were later tracked down to a hotel in the Kathu district of Phuket and arrested. Pictures taken at the station show Halan and Nadia covering their faces.
They reportedly admitted they were the individuals in the video and were each fined 5,000 baht (£115) for committing an indecent act in public by exposing themselves or engaging in obscene behaviour.
Police Colonel Anurak Parinyasathirakul said officers explained to the tourists why their actions were illegal. According to him, they claimed they were unaware it was an offence and said they had become carried away while relaxing on holiday.
“Both tourists admitted what they did and accepted the fine. Their details were recorded, and immigration authorities were notified for possible visa consideration,” he added.
Under Thai law, public indecency is punishable by a fine of up to 5,000 baht. However, the penalty has done little to deter some tourists from engaging in such behaviour.
