The Israeli military said its air defence systems responded to missile attacks launched from Iran on Thursday, leaving six people lightly injured and causing property damage, according to medics.

A spokesperson for Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service said paramedics were treating “six people who were lightly injured by blast effects,” revising an earlier report of two casualties.

Earlier in the day, an MDA spokesperson told public radio that several homes were damaged in the central city of Kafr Qassem. The city’s mayor, Haitham Taha, said the destruction was caused by cluster munitions. The military added that Home Front Command rescue teams were deployed to an impact site in central Israel.

In three separate statements issued within about 90 minutes, the military said it had “identified missiles launched from Iran toward the territory of the State of Israel.”

“Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat,” the statements said, later confirming that residents were “now permitted to leave protected spaces in all areas of the country.”

Air raid sirens sounded across central Israel, including in Jerusalem and Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, while explosions were heard in Tel Aviv following the latest alert.

The strikes came more than 14 hours after the military last reported incoming missiles from Iran.

Meanwhile, central Israel also came under overnight fire from Lebanon, where the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a series of attacks targeting military sites. Israeli media reported that six rockets were intercepted.
