A 12-year-old boy has appeared in a UK court accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her 60s, leaving her with serious injuries.

The woman was discovered at a property north of Birmingham city centre at around 6:15 p.m. on March 18, bleeding heavily from multiple wounds and barely conscious, the court heard on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Colin Charvill told Birmingham Youth Court that the woman was found lying on the floor, wearing only a t-shirt, with cuts to her chest and face. She remains in hospital in a serious condition and has been placed in an induced coma.

The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, has been charged with sexual assault and wounding, as well as theft on the same day and intentional strangulation in connection with an alleged incident on February 11. He appeared in court where he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

District Judge David Murray remanded the boy to youth detention accommodation ahead of a scheduled appearance at Birmingham Crown Court on April 21.

West Midlands Police said: “Our enquiries remain ongoing, but we understand how concerning this will be for the local community. Our officers will continue to provide reassurance in the area. If anyone has information regarding suspicious behaviour on March 18 or in the days leading up to it, please submit details via the Major Incident Public Portal or call 101, quoting log 4888 of March 18.”
