The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled the timetable for the 2027 General Elections. INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced the schedule at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday.
According to Amupitan, the Presidential and National Assembly elections are set for February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly elections will hold on March 6, 2027. He assured that the commission is fully prepared for the elections.
“By virtue of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the tenure of the President, Vice-President, Governors, and Deputy Governors, except for certain states, will expire on May 28, 2027. Membership of the National and State Assemblies will dissolve on June 8, 2027. Pursuant to Sections 76(2), 116(2), 132(2), and 178(2) of the Constitution, elections shall be held not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of these terms,” Amupitan explained.
Reaffirming INEC’s independence, he emphasized:
“Let me reiterate that the authority to publish the date of elections rests solely with INEC. The 2027 general elections will be conducted nationwide for the following offices: President and Vice-President; Governors and Deputy Governors (except for the states previously mentioned); members of the Senate; members of the House of Representatives; and members of the State Houses of Assembly.”
He added, “In exercise of the powers conferred on the Commission by the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022, the electoral process for the 2027 general election is officially set in motion. The detailed timetable and schedule of activities have been uploaded to the Commission’s website and circulated to registered political parties and stakeholders. All 36 Resident Electoral Commissioners and that of the FCT are directed to publish notices in each constituency where elections will be held. These dates reflect our commitment to ensuring transparent and credible elections that adhere strictly to the law.”
