A 95-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being trapped in a fire that broke out at a residential building on Fabikez Street, Omagba Phase 2, Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The fire started in one of the apartments in the two-storey building around 5:15 p.m. on Friday, January 30, and quickly spread to neighboring units. Residents and passersby attempted to extinguish the flames before the Anambra State Fire Service arrived and brought the inferno under control several hours later.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, January 31, the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, led by State Fire Chief Chukwudi Chiketa, said a fire truck and personnel were promptly dispatched after receiving a distress call at about 5:08 p.m.
“A fire outbreak occurred at No. 9 Fabikez Street, Omagba Phase 2, Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Friday,” Chiketa stated. “Firefighters battled the blaze and successfully prevented it from spreading to adjoining buildings. The team returned to the station at approximately 7:45 p.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
He confirmed that the elderly woman was trapped during the incident, resulting in one casualty.
“The Anambra State Fire Service reiterates its commitment to protecting lives and property,” Chiketa added. “Residents are advised to be fire-conscious, remain vigilant, and report fire emergencies promptly to ensure swift response.”
