A man accused of stealing a motorcycle has died after being attacked by an angry mob at Wannune Market in Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident occurred on January 25, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m., when the suspect, whose identity has yet to be established, was allegedly caught stealing a motorcycle in the busy market. According to sources, residents apprehended the suspect and subjected him to mob action before dispersing with the motorcycle prior to the arrival of security operatives.
“The Divisional Police Officer in Tarka mobilised a patrol team to the scene, but by the time they arrived, the crowd had already dispersed with the motorcycle,” a source said. The sources added that the suspect, who was unconscious, was rushed to the General Hospital in Wannune for medical attention but was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.
The body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the mob action, as the State Criminal Investigation Department has commenced an investigation into the incident.
