Actor Gideon Okeke has spoken out against what he described as an imbalance in the level of support Nigerian creatives show one another, particularly between the music and film industries.
In a video shared online, the actor questioned why Nigerian musicians are widely celebrated, idolised, and promoted on the global stage, while Nollywood actors, actresses, and filmmakers often do not receive the same level of public endorsement from their counterparts in the music industry.
Gideon noted that many Nigerian music stars proudly identify with labels such as the “big three” or “big five,” yet rarely use their influence to recommend or promote Nigerian films, actors, or producers. This, he said, is happening at a time when platforms like Netflix are helping Nollywood gain increased international exposure.
He further referenced global figures such as former U.S. President Barack Obama, who openly shares and promotes music he enjoys, and questioned the impact it could have if Nigerian music stars extended similar support to the film industry.
