The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Jubril Emilagba, has ordered a ban on overnight sleeping within Oyingbo Market, citing rising security concerns and the need to safeguard lives and property.

Emilagba issued the directive on Friday during a security meeting with market executives and traders, explaining that the move forms part of his administration’s broader efforts to enhance safety across markets in the local government area.

He described the ban as a preventive step aimed at discouraging criminal activity and protecting traders and their goods. “No one is permitted to sleep in the market. This directive is strictly for security reasons, to prevent criminal elements from exploiting the environment,” he said, stressing that markets should remain spaces for legitimate commercial activities rather than overnight habitation.

The chairman said the local government would work closely with market leadership and relevant security agencies to ensure full compliance. “We are committed to keeping Oyingbo Market safe for traders, customers, and nearby residents. Security agencies will be involved in enforcing this directive,” he added.

Emilagba also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continuous engagement with market stakeholders, noting that cooperation from traders is essential to maintaining a secure and orderly environment. He further urged traders to register for the National Identification Number (NIN) and the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, describing both as vital for effective identity management and security planning.

In addition, he encouraged eligible traders to participate in the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) e-registration exercise, saying it would help promote grassroots political inclusion.

Speaking on behalf of the traders, the Women Leader of Oyingbo Market, Basira Balogun, welcomed the directive, describing it as timely. “We understand the security implications and will work with the local government to ensure compliance among traders,” she said.
