The Lagos State Police Command has explained its decision to temporarily suspend the investigation into multiple rape and related allegations involving Chris Okafor, founder of the Mountain of Liberation and Miracle Ministry.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, had ordered an investigation into the allegations and instructed Okafor to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department at Panti. The police later announced that the case had been transferred to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing Zone 2, Sylvester Alabi, for further handling.

Giving an update on the matter, the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said the investigation was paused after the complainants invited by the police failed to honour invitations. She added that the Lagos State Police Command could not conduct a parallel investigation while the case was already being handled by the Zone 2 Command under the supervision of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

According to Adebisi, no further investigative steps have been taken by the command since the transfer. She explained that when Okafor reported to the police, it was discovered that similar petitions against him were already under investigation at Zone 2, prompting the Commissioner of Police to halt the Lagos Command’s probe.

She further stated that repeated efforts to reach the complainants were unsuccessful, leading the police to suspend further action for now. The command, she said, is awaiting the conclusion of the investigation at Zone 2 before deciding on the next steps. Okafor was subsequently released on self-recognition to report to Zone 2 for continued investigation.

The allegations against Okafor came into the public spotlight in December 2025 after actress Doris Ogala accused him of breaking a promise to marry her, an action she claimed caused her emotional distress. As the controversy gained attention, Okafor issued a public apology to Ogala and other women he said he had wronged. He also accused his former wife, Bessem, of adultery, an allegation she denied while countering with claims that she suffered physical abuse during their marriage.

Amid the ongoing public dispute, Okafor announced that he would step aside from his ministerial duties for one month.
