The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially resumed the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, marking the start of the second phase of the process.

The resumption, effective Monday, January 5, was confirmed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman.

Background of the Exercise

The move follows the conclusion of the first phase, which ended on December 10, 2025. INEC had initially launched online pre-registration on August 18, 2025, before starting physical registration at designated centres across the country on August 25, 2025.

During the first phase, 9,891,801 Nigerians initiated the online pre-registration process. Of these, 2,572,054 registrations were fully completed nationwide by November 28, 2025—comprising 1,503,832 online registrations and 1,068,222 physical registrations.

Between the first and second phases, INEC carried out statutory activities, including the display of the voters’ register for claims and objections. In line with Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022, the register was displayed from December 15 to 21, 2025, at local government offices.

What Nigerians Need to Know

INEC has urged eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the resumed CVR to:

  • Enrol as voters
  • Transfer their voting locations
  • Update personal details

The commission also encouraged those who registered during the first phase to verify their information, report errors, and raise objections regarding ineligible or deceased persons on the voters’ register.

Exceptions

CVR activities remain suspended in Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) due to ongoing electoral activities. INEC has promised to announce new resumption dates for these locations in due course.
