Nigerian lawyer and author, Charles Omole, has alleged that there are at least five distinct cabals operating within President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Omole made the claim during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, December 18, while speaking about power dynamics within the current government. He listed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son; and the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, as figures associated with some of these groups.
According to Omole, who recently launched a book on former President Muhammadu Buhari, every president is surrounded by trusted aides, but strong institutional systems are needed to prevent what he described as “state or presidential capture.”
“The president will always have people around him, but you need to put systems in place to avoid state capture or presidential capture. From what I can see, the current government has at least five cabals within the presidency,” he said.
Omole further claimed that one of the cabals is led by President Tinubu himself, based on his personal analysis.
He explained that one of the groups is centred around the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and includes individuals within his circle, such as FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
“Secondly, you have Seyi Tinubu’s group, consisting of those he helped secure some government appointments. And of course, there is the First Lady’s group, Remi Tinubu,” Omole added.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected leader from 2015 to 2023. He died in London on July 13 this year at the age of 82.
