American rapper Wiz Khalifa is facing a potential nine-month prison sentence in Romania over a marijuana-related offence, though his legal team is working to overturn the ruling.
On Thursday, December 18, Romania’s Constanța Court of Appeal upheld an appeal filed by the DIICOT Constanța Territorial Service, a state prosecutor’s office, which sought a custodial sentence for the rapper. The ruling replaces an earlier decision that had imposed a fine of 3,000 lei (approximately $700). Sources familiar with the case say the sentence is not yet final, as Wiz Khalifa’s lawyers have begun the process of appealing the decision in an effort to secure an alternative outcome.
The case dates back to July 2024, when Wiz Khalifa was arrested and briefly detained following a performance at the Beach Please Festival in Costinești. During the show, he was reportedly seen smoking marijuana on stage while performing to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s hit song “The Next Episode.”
Romanian authorities subsequently charged him under the country’s strict drug laws, which criminalize the possession and use of cannabis.
Legal experts note that Romania enforces harsh penalties for drug-related offences, making the appeal process potentially challenging.
