FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has reaffirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s judiciary in order to enhance productivity, reduce delays, and uphold judicial independence.

Speaking on Monday, December 8, at the opening of the 2025/2026 Legal Year of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, Wike announced that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has made fresh budgetary provisions to build additional residential houses for judges of the FCT High Court, addressing long-standing accommodation challenges.

According to him, “Well-equipped court facilities, chambers, and support infrastructure ensure that judicial work is conducted in a professional, safe, and conducive environment.”

Wike also disclosed that, under President Tinubu’s directive, the FCTA has officially handed over the Certificate of Occupancy for land allocated to the Supreme Court and has begun full perimeter fencing of the entire complex to prevent encroachment and improve security.

He noted that this intervention has restored confidence within the judiciary, adding that such actions positively impact every arm of the judicial system.

The minister further highlighted several ongoing judiciary-support projects, including:

  • New residences for Heads of Courts
  • A new Magistrate Court Complex in Jabi
  • Staff quarters for the Nigerian Law School
  • New Court of Appeal and Federal High Court complexes in Abuja

Explaining the purpose of these initiatives, Wike said:
“Providing comfortable and secure accommodation allows judges to focus entirely on the timely and efficient administration of justice, free from the distractions of inadequate living conditions.”

Reiterating the administration’s commitment to reforms, he added:
“As we step into the new Legal Year, the FCT Administration remains resolute in pushing for the timely completion of new residential quarters for Heads of Courts and the Jabi Magistrate Court Complex. We will continue to work with courts in the FCT to support the digitisation of court proceedings and registries.”

Wike concluded by stressing the importance of a strong judicial system:
“Justice must never be compromised under any circumstances, for it is the bedrock of our democracy and the safeguard of public trust.”
