Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed concern over the heavy economic burden of tackling insecurity, revealing that his administration has spent approximately N100 billion this year to improve the state’s security situation.
Zulum made the disclosure on Thursday, December 4, during a visit to the Emir of Uba, Ali Ibn Mamza, at his palace in Uba town, Askira/Uba Local Government Area. The governor said the visit was aimed at assessing the security situation in the area, noting that persistent insecurity had forced contractors to abandon road construction projects.
He stated, “My visit is to carry out a lot of work, and most importantly, to assess the security situation. Security is crucial; without it, there can be no peace. I have plans to construct roads, but contractors are unwilling to work here. That’s why I am establishing a quarry site in Gwoza and purchasing 100 trucks so our road maintenance agency can construct roads.
“This year, we have spent about N100 billion on security. If there is peace, why wouldn’t we invest in developmental projects? We have many plans for education, health, and more. The truth is, we are spending heavily on security while also putting lasting structures on the ground.”
Zulum assured residents that road construction would commence soon, alongside the establishment of higher education institutions, computer centers, and other developmental projects.
In response, the Emir of Uba, Ali Ibn Mamza, commended Governor Zulum’s efforts despite the security challenges facing the state.
He said, “You have done a lot for us with many projects. Without your efforts, we would be suffering. We will continue to pray for lasting peace in Borno and throughout the country.”
