Presiding Bishop of Living Faith Church Worldwide, David Oyedepo, has issued a stern warning to Christians amid escalating insecurity in Nigeria. His caution follows a spate of recent attacks on churches that have left multiple people dead and others abducted, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action.
Bishop Oyedepo’s message comes as international attention intensifies. Italy has become the second G7 nation, after the United States, to call for an immediate end to the targeted killings of Christians in Nigeria.
In a strong statement, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the “renewed violence” against Christian communities, declaring that such attacks are unacceptable and affirming that religious freedom is an inviolable right. She urged the Nigerian government to protect Christian and other religious communities and prosecute those responsible for the attacks.
Earlier, former U.S. President Donald Trump had warned of possible military action if the Nigerian government failed to address what he described as a genocide against Christians in the country.
Speaking at a Pre-Shiloh Encounter Church Service, Bishop Oyedepo expressed deep concern about the nation’s security situation.
“Developments in the past two weeks, particularly in Nigeria, are worrisome to say the least. There is a need for a prompt response in prayers to stop the killings once and for all. You can’t trade people’s lives for your comfort,” he said.
“All the innocent blood shed is crying out for vengeance… all the perpetrators will pay with their lives.”
The cleric called on church members to engage in what he described as “midnight raid prayers”, urging:
“Every member of this church should be awake one hour every night for one week before violence descends into anarchy in Nigeria.”
He further criticized the lack of effective response following the attacks, emphasizing that “The God of justice is rising.”
“Nigeria will never descend into chaos. When God steps in, the pride of men is cut. Every arrogance will be brought low,” Bishop Oyedepo added.
