The former Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State chapter, has sent a strong message to victims of domestic violence, urging them to leave abusive relationships without waiting for permission from their spouses.

She emphasized that no one should remain in a violent home under the guise of marriage or cultural expectations, stressing that self-preservation is more important than societal judgment.

According to her, many victims of abuse often hesitate to move out because they fear criticism, stigma, or retaliation from their partners or families. She reminded them that the law protects their right to safety, dignity, and freedom from harm.

“You do not need the permission of an abusive spouse to move out,” she said. “Your safety comes first. Once there’s violence, it’s no longer love — it’s danger.”

She further advised victims to seek help immediately by reaching out to organizations like FIDA, gender desks at police stations, or trusted NGOs that provide shelter and legal support for survivors.

In addition, she called on families, community leaders, and religious institutions to support victims instead of pressuring them to stay, noting that too many lives have been lost to domestic violence that could have been prevented.

The former FIDA chairperson concluded with a reminder that leaving an abusive relationship is not weakness — it’s an act of courage and self-respect.

“Your life matters. Walk away, get help, and rebuild. You deserve peace,” she added.
