The Yobe State Police Command has arrested one Mika’ilu Abdulkarim, a resident of Tsirma Village in Jigawa State, for allegedly defiling an eight-year-old girl, Hafsat Babagana, of Garin Alkali in Bursari Local Government Area.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, stating that the suspect allegedly lured the minor—who is reportedly of unsound mind—with a promise of ₦500 before having unlawful carnal knowledge of her at Garin Alkali Market.

“Police operatives from the Garin Alkali Division swiftly arrested the suspect following a report lodged by the victim’s father. Both the suspect and the victim were taken to the Specialist Hospital, Gashu’a, for medical examination,” the statement read.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Damaturu for further investigation, after which the suspect will be charged to court.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, condemned the act and urged parents to remain vigilant. He also called on communities to support efforts aimed at curbing sexual and gender-based violence in the state.
