The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the mass defection of leaders and governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has vindicated his decision to support President Bola Tinubu.
Wike stated this on Wednesday, October 15, during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the main carriageways on the Outer Southern Expressway in Abuja.
According to him, those who once criticised his political stance are now defecting to the APC, proving that his earlier decision was right.
“I have been watching on television and social media people who said I wanted to destabilise the party and that I was working for the APC. All of them are now in the APC. So, if that is true, they should commend me for working for where they are heading. I should be commended for doing a good job for them,” Wike said.
He urged political leaders across states to be sincere with their people and focus on governance, recalling his experience as governor of Rivers State.
“I was a governor for eight years, running around banks to look for money to execute projects. Sometimes, the funds that came in monthly were not even enough to pay salaries and allowances, not to talk about projects,” he said.
Wike praised President Tinubu’s leadership, saying it has improved the financial stability of states and the FCT.
“Today, because of the decisive leadership of someone, all the states and the FCT no longer have to run around banks for loans. Instead, banks are now the ones seeking to do business with states. Every state now has money—not only to pay salaries and run government activities, but also to embark on projects. It was not like that before,” he added.
The minister described his decision to align with the Tinubu-led administration as “worthwhile,” noting that the financial reforms have enabled states to operate more responsibly.
“If, for that reason, many people are now supporting Mr President, I think it is worthwhile. No governor will now leave debts for his successor, unlike what used to happen before. That’s the kind of visionary and purposeful leadership the country needs—leadership that can take decisive actions where others hesitated,” he stated.
