President Joe Biden has publicly praised former President Donald Trump for successfully negotiating a peace deal that led to the release of the last 20 remaining hostages held by Hamas.
In a statement on X, Biden acknowledged the significance of the deal but also pointed to his administration’s efforts in laying the groundwork for the breakthrough.
“The road to this deal was not easy. My Administration worked relentlessly to bring hostages home, get relief to Palestinian civilians, and end the war,” Biden said.
He went on to commend Trump and his team for finalizing the renewed ceasefire, expressing relief and gratitude that the hostages, who had endured unimaginable hardship, were finally reunited with their families.
Biden also expressed hope for the future of Gaza and the wider Middle East:
“I am deeply grateful and relieved that this day has come—for the last living 20 hostages who have been through unimaginable hell and are finally reunited with their families and loved ones.”
“I am overjoyed for the civilians in Gaza who have experienced immeasurable loss and will finally get the chance to rebuild their lives.”
“Now, with the backing of the United States and the world, the Middle East is on a path to peace that I hope endures—a future for Israelis and Palestinians alike with equal measures of peace, dignity, and safety.”
Former President Trump visited Israel on Monday to celebrate the release of the hostages after helping broker the peace deal. Speaking at a peace summit alongside Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, Trump called for a new era of harmony in the region.
“We have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to put the old feuds and bitter hatreds behind us,” Trump said.
“Everybody said it’s not possible to do. And it’s going to happen. And it is happening before your very eyes.”
