A pregnant widow has been banished from the Ugbema community in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State after being accused of shoplifting.
According to local sources, the woman—who recently lost her husband—was allegedly caught stealing small food items from shops in a desperate attempt to feed herself, her young son, and her unborn child.
Eyewitnesses say she had taken items on multiple occasions, but her actions caught up with her on Saturday, October 10, 2025, when community youths apprehended her. She was reportedly subjected to public humiliation under the scorching sun before being driven out of the community.
It was later revealed that community elders ordered her expulsion as punishment for her actions.
The incident has sparked criticism from many residents, who argue that the woman’s situation called for compassion and assistance—not punishment. Some have called on government agencies and humanitarian groups to intervene and offer her the support she needs.
