U.S. President Donald Trump will sign an executive order on September 19 that will add a $100,000 fee to all H-1B visa applications, according to a White House official.
This new fee is part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to limit immigration, especially foreign workers coming to the U.S. for job opportunities. The move is expected to restrict the H-1B visa program to applicants who can afford the higher cost.
The H-1B visa allows companies to hire skilled foreign workers, particularly in tech, engineering, education, and healthcare. Many workers come from countries like India and China. Last year, India accounted for 71% of approved H-1B visas, while China made up nearly 12%.
Industry experts warn that the $100,000 fee will increase costs for companies, especially small businesses and startups. Large tech companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta can likely manage the expense, but smaller firms might struggle.
Deedy Das, a partner at Menlo Ventures, said the fee could discourage top global talent from coming to the U.S., which could hurt innovation and economic growth.
The administration argues that the current program allows companies to hire foreign workers at lower wages, which affects American workers’ salaries. They see the fee as a way to protect U.S. jobs.
