Pandemonium erupted on Saturday during the planned official defection of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), after suspected thugs stormed the venue and launched a violent attack on attendees.

The incident took place in the Alimosho area of Lagos State, where Rhodes-Vivour was scheduled to formally announce his move to the ADC. According to eyewitnesses and local reports, the attackers arrived armed with dangerous weapons and targeted members of the ADC who had gathered for the event.

Shockingly, the attack occurred in the presence of security operatives, who were reportedly at the scene but did not intervene.

Speaking to journalists, Rhodes-Vivour claimed that both security forces and armed groups had earlier blocked access to the original venue of the defection ceremony, despite full payment having been made for its use. He said police officers on the ground told him the directive to block the venue came “from above,” and advised him to take the issue up with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.

During the briefing, Rhodes-Vivour also presented his personal photographer, who sustained injuries in the attack and had his equipment destroyed by the assailants.

As of now, there has been no official statement from the police or the Lagos State government regarding the incident.
