At least two children, aged 8 and 10, were k!lled after a gunman opened fire inside a Catholic church in Minneapolis during a back-to-school mass on Wednesday, August 27.
Authorities said 17 others, including several children, were injured in the attack, which took place at Annunciation Catholic Church during the first week of classes at its parish school.
Witnesses reported that the shooter, dressed in black and armed with a semiautomatic weapon, fired multiple rounds through the church’s stained-glass windows as students and staff sat in the pews. One parent, speaking to The Star Tribune, estimated the gunman fired “50 to 100 shots,” killing two young children.
“This is terrible. This is evil. I don’t know how you defend against this,” the parent said.
Law enforcement sources confirmed to FOX 9 that the gunman is de@d. While early reports suggested as many as 20 people may have been shot, officials have yet to release an official casualty count.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called the attack “horrific” and assured residents that the shooter had been “contained” and there was no ongoing threat.
“I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence,” Walz posted on X.
Emergency crews, including the FBI and local police, responded to the scene. Hennepin Healthcare, which operates Minnesota’s largest emergency department, confirmed it was treating victims but did not provide further details.
Former President Donald Trump also addressed the tragedy on Truth Social, saying he had been briefed on the situation and that federal authorities were monitoring developments.
The mass shooting came amid a spate of gun violence in Minneapolis. A day earlier, one person was k!lled and six others injured in a shooting outside a local high school. Later that night, two more people were fatally shot in separate incidents across the city.
