The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, Bernard Udemezue, for three months over a social media post.

The suspension was announced during plenary on Tuesday, August 26, following a WhatsApp message the lawmaker shared in a group largely populated by his constituents. In the message, Udemezue disclosed his allowances as a legislator and revealed that he receives N10 million quarterly from the state government for constituency projects.

The disclosures reportedly angered his colleagues, leading the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges—chaired by Majority Leader and member representing Ekwusigo Constituency, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme—to recommend his suspension without pay. The committee described his actions as “unparliamentary” and barred him from appearing in the Assembly during the suspension period.

Udemezue, who has been openly critical of the Assembly leadership on social media, maintained that he had done nothing wrong. He stated that his intention was to keep his constituents informed about his activities and alleged that his suspension was an act of victimization for exposing that lawmakers receive N10 million quarterly for constituency projects, some of which, he claimed, are misappropriated.
