Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has officially declared his intention to contest the presidency again in the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made through his longtime associate and former campaign spokesperson, Tunde Olusunle, who conveyed Atiku’s message while addressing recent speculation about his political future.
Atiku’s declaration puts to rest rumors suggesting he might step away from active politics. The speculation followed comments by Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, who had claimed Atiku was now more focused on contributing to national development outside the presidency.
Speaking from his holiday residence in the United Arab Emirates, Atiku dismissed the remarks, stating that Olateju did not speak on his behalf and had not consulted with him.
“When people stand in for me at events, we usually go over my thoughts on the subject. In this case, there was no engagement with me. Prof. Olateju was not speaking for me,” Atiku clarified.
“I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned to. The level of poverty, pain, and national decline is unacceptable.”
Reaffirming his commitment to opposition politics, Atiku expressed confidence in the strength of the PDP-led coalition and suggested that it would defy critics in the next election.
Olusunle further quoted Atiku as saying:
“The deceit, the erosion of values, large-scale corruption, and lack of accountability in today’s governance must concern every patriot. I am offering myself once again to lead the effort to reclaim and rebuild our traumatised nation.”
With this statement, Atiku becomes one of the first major political figures to officially declare interest in the 2027 presidential race.
