The Federal Government has dismissed 15 personnel of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and demoted 59 others for various acts of misconduct and indiscipline.

The action followed a review of 224 disciplinary cases by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB). The decisions were based on recommendations from the Board’s Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee (BDGPC) after thorough investigations and due process.

In a statement, NCoS Public Relations Officer Umar Abubakar said the disciplinary measures reflect the government’s commitment to enforcing accountability and maintaining standards within the correctional system.

“Fifteen personnel were dismissed for serious misconduct and violation of Service regulations. Additionally, 59 officers were demoted for breaches of professional standards, while 42 received written warnings,” Abubakar stated.

He added that 16 officers were exonerated, and seven are currently on suspension pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.

“In one case, an officer was suspended and recommended for handover to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution due to the severity of the offence,” he said.

Furthermore, eight personnel were compulsorily retired, and one officer had his rank reversed and was ordered to refund all earnings received while holding the rank in error.

The Board, chaired by Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunde Ojo, reaffirmed its dedication to upholding ethical and professional standards within the Service. Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwacuhe, assured that all disciplinary actions would be carried out fairly and in line with established procedures, while urging public support for a more accountable correctional system.
