A newly recruited soldier, Dauda Dedan, has been accused of fatally stabbing Police Constable Aaron John of the Taraba State Command in Jalingo, the state capital.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Taraba State Command, James Lashen, confirmed the incident to reporters. According to him, the tragic event occurred around 9 p.m. on Monday in Mayo-Goyi, a suburb of Jalingo.

Lashen explained that Constable John was responding to reports from residents about a dispute involving the soldier. During the intervention, the officer was caught in the middle of the conflict, which escalated and resulted in the soldier stabbing him.

The police spokesperson added that the soldier is currently at large, but the Nigerian Army has begun an investigation into the matter. The Army has also assured the police that they are committed to tracking down the suspect and ensuring he faces justice.

“We have reported the incident to the 6 Brigade Headquarters of the Nigerian Army, and they have assured us of their commitment to apprehend the fugitive soldier. Both the Army and the police are working closely together on this,” Lashen said. “We have visited the soldier’s residence and will ensure he is arrested and held accountable.”
