Tobi Amusan Clinches Fifth Straight National 100m Hurdles Title in Lagos

World record holder Tobi Amusan once again proved she’s in a league of her own after storming to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials, held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.

The 28-year-old sprint queen crossed the line in a commanding 12.57 seconds, securing her fifth consecutive national title in the event. Rising star Adaobi Tabugbo followed in second place with 13.03s, while Faith Osamuyi finished third in 13.36s.

Amusan’s dominant performance reaffirms her status as Nigeria’s top hurdler as she gears up for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

More Highlights from the AFN Trials

  • Men’s 400m:
    Gafar Badmus took the win with an impressive time of 45.71s, edging out Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29s) and David Akhalu (46.91s).
  • Women’s 400m:
    In a surprising turn of events, veteran Patience Okon-George was disqualified, clearing the path for African U-20 champion Favour Onyah, who claimed victory in 52.69s. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna rounded out the top three.
  • Women’s 100m:
    Young sensation Chioma Nweke stunned the crowd by dethroning defending champion Olayinka Olajide, clocking 11.27s to take her first national title. Olajide came second in 11.39s, and Iyanuoluwa Bada placed third with 11.45s.

With standout performances across multiple events, the AFN Trials continue to showcase Nigeria’s growing pool of athletic talent ahead of global competitions.
