FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has expressed support for Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, who recently came under criticism for remarks directed at former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
While commissioning commercial buses in Edo State on Monday, July 22, Wike stated that the governor was justified in requesting prior notification whenever Obi intends to visit the state.
According to Wike, high-profile political figures like Obi must be afforded adequate security, and any failure to inform the state government of such visits could lead to serious consequences. He emphasized that if any unfortunate incident were to occur, the governor of the state would be held accountable.
“I’ve been watching the unnecessary debate on TV,” Wike said. “That’s why I say Nigerians forget easily. When I was governor and Peter Obi was coming to my state, he informed me in advance. I provided logistics and vehicles for him because, at that level—as a presidential candidate—if something happens and he didn’t notify you, the governor would be blamed.”
He added, “People should stop playing politics when the truth is being told. Obi, knowing the risks involved with his so-called coalition, should understand that anything can happen. If it does, the governor will be accused of being behind it. So, Governor Okpebholo’s statement was absolutely right.”
