A two-year-old boy tragically died after being attacked by a swarm of wasps while playing with friends in northeastern Thailand.
The child, identified as Narathip, also known as Akhin, was riding a bicycle near an abandoned rice mill in Nakhon Ratchasima Province on Saturday, July 19, when a swarm of wasps descended on the group.
While the other children managed to escape, Narathip, unable to flee quickly due to his age, fell from his bike and was overwhelmed by the insects.
The children ran to alert his father, who rushed to the scene and found his son lying on the ground. Braving the swarm, the father carried Narathip to safety, sustaining multiple stings in the process.
Both were taken to Bua Yai Hospital, where Narathip sadly passed away six hours later. Doctors confirmed that he died from a severe allergic reaction to the stings, which caused a rapid heart rate, acute kidney failure, and cardiac system failure.
The boy’s father remains in critical condition.
Following the incident, local authorities located and destroyed the wasp hive, which was found hanging under a metal structure in the rice mill’s yard.
Pitakpong Sirisak, a member of the Provincial Council, stated:
“Since the incident, I’ve received more than 10 calls requesting the removal of wasp nests. We’ve already coordinated with rescue teams to eliminate four of them. I urge residents to carefully inspect their homes, surrounding trees, and electric poles for wasp nests.
“If you find a newly forming nest, remove it immediately. But if it’s fully developed, do not attempt to handle it yourself—contact local authorities for safe removal.”
