The U.S. Senate has approved a request from the White House to cancel $9.4 billion in federal spending, with major cuts directed at foreign aid and funding for public broadcasters NPR and PBS.

In a narrow 51–48 vote held late Wednesday, July 16, the Senate passed the bill, which now heads to the House of Representatives. According to CNN, the House is expected to give final approval by July 18.

If passed, the legislation will move to President Donald Trump’s desk for his signature.

The proposal was first introduced in early June, when House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that the administration had formally submitted the plan to Congress. The targeted funds were described as “wasteful” by both Johnson and the Department of Government Efficiency.

Separately, President Trump signed an executive order in May to halt federal funding for NPR and PBS, citing “biased reporting” as the reason for the move.

That decision has already sparked legal action. On May 27, NPR and several Colorado-based public radio stations filed a lawsuit against the administration, accusing it of attempting to suppress press freedom.
