A suspected electricity vandal lost his life in the early hours of Monday, July 14, 2024, while allegedly attempting to steal high-tension cables in the Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. along New Airport Road, near the Poultry Farm area. Eyewitnesses reported that there was a brief power outage, during which the unidentified man made his move. Tragically, power was restored while he was still on the cables, resulting in his electrocution.

According to onlookers, the man believed to be a resident of the area was found wearing only short socks and carrying tools like pliers, indicating an attempt to tamper with the electrical infrastructure.

The disturbing scene drew a large crowd of local residents who gathered to view the man’s lifeless body, which remained suspended from the high-tension wires for several hours.

Locals noted that the community has experienced repeated acts of vandalism, especially targeting transformers and other electricity infrastructure. However, incidents involving direct contact with live high-tension cables, particularly at night are considered extremely rare.

As of the time of this report, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) had not released an official statement, and the victim’s body was still entangled in the cables.
