Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away after a prolonged illness. In a solemn tribute, the Nigerian government has ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast across the country for three days.

Buhari, a retired Major General, served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 following a military coup, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His time in office was marked by a strong anti-corruption stance, a commitment to infrastructure development, and controversial but impactful policies aimed at economic and security reform.

President tinubu led tributes to Buhari, describing him as “a man of discipline, service, and deep patriotism” whose contributions to Nigeria “will be remembered for generations.”

As citizens reflect on Buhari’s complex legacy, many are taking time to honor a leader who shaped Nigeria’s political landscape over several decades. Condolence messages have poured in from global leaders, former colleagues, and everyday Nigerians, expressing grief and support for the late president’s family.

Buhari will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites.
