A tragic building collapse in the Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government Area, Kano State, has claimed at least four lives and left seven others injured. The three-storey structure, which was still under construction, came crashing down on Sunday evening shortly after a heavy downpour.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the Abedi area as rain battered the city. Emergency officials revealed that some of the victims were construction workers on site, while others were passersby who had sought shelter inside the unfinished building to escape the storm.
The Kano State Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) swiftly responded to the scene. NEMA’s spokesperson, Umar Madigawa, confirmed that the agency received a distress call around 6:49 p.m. and launched a joint search and rescue operation with local authorities.
By 11:30 a.m. on Monday, 11 people had been pulled from the rubble, four were confirmed dead, while seven others were rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital for emergency treatment.
Rescue efforts are ongoing as responders continue to search the debris, holding out hope that any remaining survivors will be found.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns about building safety standards and enforcement in urban areas, particularly during the rainy season.
