Former President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former Head of State, has passed away at the age of 82.
The news was confirmed by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, who announced Buhari’s passing in a post on X (formerly Twitter). According to the statement, the former president died this afternoon at a clinic in London.
“Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un.
The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.
May Allah accept him into Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,”* Bashir wrote.
President Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and their children.
He served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, handing over power to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His administration was marked by a focus on anti-corruption, national security, and economic reforms, though his tenure also faced criticism over worsening insecurity and economic challenges.
Buhari also previously led the country as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, before returning decades later as a civilian leader.
