President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London at approximately 4:30 PM today following a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made in a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
“President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the former president, and extended his heartfelt condolences,” the statement read.
“As a mark of respect, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of President Muhammadu Buhari back to Nigeria.”
As a further gesture of national mourning, President Tinubu has also ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff across the country.
Remembering Buhari’s Legacy
The late President Muhammadu Buhari was a significant figure in Nigeria’s political history. He was elected twice as a civilian president—in 2015 and again in 2019, serving until 2023. Before his civilian presidency, he held power as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.
President Tinubu praised Buhari’s contributions to the country and pledged that the government will honor his memory with the dignity befitting a former head of state.
Further details regarding burial arrangements are expected to be released by the presidency in the coming days.
