A 36-year-old Nigerian man, Lucky Ogbeijielele, has been arrested in Greater Sudbury, Canada, following a tragic incident that left his 63-year-old mother-in-law dead and his wife seriously injured.
The violent attack, described by police as a case of intimate partner violence, occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at a residence on Lorne Street.
According to a statement by the Greater Sudbury Police, officers responded to the scene around 12:35 a.m. after receiving reports of a violent altercation. Upon arrival, they found a 32-year-old woman, believed to be the suspect’s wife, outside the home with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was immediately taken to hospital by paramedics.
Inside the residence, officers made a heartbreaking discovery a 63-year-old woman had sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two young children were also found inside the home. Thankfully, they were not physically harmed during the incident.
Initially, the suspect had fled the scene before police arrived. Authorities launched an intensive search and described him as a Black male, 5’7″ tall, with short black hair, a beard, and last seen wearing light-colored shorts and a dark shirt. They also believed he had suffered an injury to one of his legs during the attack.
Later that morning, just before 11:30 a.m., officers located the suspect in a wooded area off Alder Street, with what appeared to be self-inflicted injuries. He was taken into custody without resistance and transported to hospital for medical treatment. Despite his condition, he remains in police custody.
Charges Filed
The suspect is now facing multiple charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, including:
- First-Degree Murder
- Attempted Murder
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Forcible Confinement
- Choking
Due to his medical condition, authorities have not yet confirmed when he will appear in court for a bail hearing.
Police remain at the scene, gathering evidence, canvassing the neighborhood for information, and reviewing surveillance footage. Members of the K9 Unit have also been deployed to assist with an evidentiary ground search.
This tragic event has sparked fresh conversations about the ongoing dangers of domestic violence and the need for continued awareness and support for victims.
