Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, were laid to rest on Saturday morning, July 5, at a funeral service held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar (Mother Church of Gondomar) in Portugal.

The service, which began at 10 a.m., was attended by a large contingent from Liverpool Football Club. Among those present were club captain Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Darwin Núñez, Alexis Mac Allister, Joe Gomez, Conor Bradley, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, and head coach Arne Slot. Sporting director Richard Hughes and CEO of Football Michael Edwards also paid their respects.

Several Portuguese national teammates were in attendance, including Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias, Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Al Hilal’s João Cancelo, and Rúben Neves, among others.

Jota, 28, and Silva, 25, tragically died in a car crash near Zamora in northwestern Spain in the early hours of Thursday, July 3. The Lamborghini they were traveling in veered off an isolated stretch of highway shortly after midnight and burst into flames. Reports indicate the brothers were en route to catch a ferry to England, where Jota was expected to rejoin Liverpool after his summer break.

The tragedy occurred just two weeks after Jota married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso. The couple shared three children, the youngest of whom was born last year. Jota had recently completed a successful season with Liverpool, helping the club clinch the Premier League title.
