Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has harshly criticized a sweeping tax and spending bill championed by President Donald Trump, labeling the legislation a “disgusting abomination.”

“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore. This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk posted Tuesday on his social media platform X. “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

The legislation, officially titled the One Big Beautiful Bill, extends the 2017 Trump tax cuts, boosts funding for border security and defense, and makes significant reductions to social safety net programs such as Medicaid and food assistance. The bill passed the House last month and is currently under consideration in the Senate, where lawmakers are expected to make amendments.

Musk’s remarks follow pushback from top Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), after Musk said during a recent appearance on CBS News Sunday Morning that the bill “undermines” the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a federal initiative Musk helped lead.

In response, Johnson stated in interviews with Fox News and NBC News that he had sent Musk a “long text” explaining the details of the legislation. He emphasized that the bill is not a traditional government-wide spending package but one advancing through a special “reconciliation” process, which allows it to bypass a Democratic filibuster in the Senate.

Johnson has also promised swift action on a separate $9.4 billion measure that would codify DOGE’s proposed cuts to agencies such as the United States Agency for International Development and public broadcasting. The White House is expected to send that package to the Senate on Tuesday.

In a follow-up post, Musk warned, “It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to Musk’s criticism during a press briefing.

“The president already knows where Elon Musk stands on this bill. It doesn’t change the president’s opinion,” Leavitt said.

Musk, who recently stepped back from his role as a special government employee, remains a vocal figure on national policy debates.
