Dozens of students, teachers, and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members narrowly escaped death on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, when classrooms collapsed during a heavy downpour at Government Secondary School, Namne, in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. while students were writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The collapse was triggered by a windstorm that accompanied the torrential rain.

Those inside the affected classrooms were trapped for hours under the debris before local residents intervened and rescued them. A community member, Alhaji DanAzumi Lauris, told Daily Trust that the collapse affected the second batch of students, as the first group had already completed their exams and left the premises.

According to DanAzumi, the injured students, teachers, and corps members were taken to a nearby Primary Healthcare Centre, located just a few meters from the school, where they are currently receiving treatment.

He added that the storm not only destroyed parts of the school but also damaged many houses in the town.
