Authorities in Mexico have launched an investigation after a 15-year-old female footballer tragically collapsed and died during a youth tournament match.
Atziri Ledif Galeana Valencia had been playing for Chivas LZC against Toriz in the final of a girls’ football tournament on Saturday when she collapsed in the 72nd minute, reportedly due to a suspected heat stroke.
The match was held during an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 34°C (93°F). Emergency responders on site administered CPR, oxygen, and cold compresses in an effort to stabilize her condition, according to Need To Know. She was transported to a hospital by ambulance but sadly passed away.
Following the incident, the tournament and all matches scheduled for Sunday were suspended. The Michoacán State Prosecutor’s Office has since opened an investigation to determine whether proper health and safety protocols were followed during the event.
In the wake of her passing, Chivas LZC paid tribute to Atziri, describing her as a “champion” and honoring her memory.
“The Chivas LZC family is going through the worst of times saying goodbye to you, dear Atziri Galeana,” the club said in a statement.
“You will always live in our hearts. You have left an indelible mark on the lives of your teammates, coaching staff, supporters, and the club. Until we meet again to play a more beautiful final—rest in peace, champion.
Celebrate up there as you leave as a worthy champion. We will always carry this championship in our hearts for you, forever our warrior.”
Liga Deportiva de Guacamayas, the tournament’s organizing body, also expressed their condolences and shared a floral tribute in her memory.
“We deeply regret what happened during the final of the Women’s Youth category between Chivas and Arcelor Mittal Toriz,” the organization said.
“We join in the grief that overwhelms the family of Atziri Galeana, a player for the Chivas team, and the entire sports community of our Municipal League.
We express our heartfelt condolences for this irreparable loss and stand in solidarity with her family, parents, and siblings during this difficult time, with the hope that they soon find comfort.”
