Seven inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesha, Osun State, following the collapse of the facility’s aging perimeter wall.
The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, after an overnight rainfall weakened the wall, leading to its structural failure. According to a statement by Umar Abubakar, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), authorities have launched an extensive manhunt to locate and return the escapees to custody.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. He reassured the public that the NCoS is working closely with other security agencies and local community leaders to intensify efforts toward recapturing the fugitives.
NCoS Launches Manhunt Following Rainfall Damage to Perimeter Wall
“The Nigerian Correctional Service has initiated an extensive search operation following the breach of its security at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesha due to heavy rainfall,” the statement read.
“The force majeure event occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, resulting in the escape of seven inmates.
“The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. The Service is collaborating with sister security agencies and community leaders to recapture the escapees and return them to custody.
