The Labour Party in Lagos State has suspended its former state chairperson, Pastor Dayo Ekong, along with another official, Sam Okpala, due to allegations of gross misconduct and violations of the party’s constitution.

The suspension was announced after a meeting of the Lagos State Caretaker Executive Committee, which also decided to dissolve all Local Government and Ward Executive Committees across the state. In a statement signed by Rotimi Odunaike, Chairman of the Lagos State Caretaker Committee, and Dorcas I. Omorodion, Secretary of the Committee, the party explained that these disciplinary actions were necessary to restore order and ensure adherence to the party’s constitution.

Pastor Ekong, who previously held both the roles of State Chairperson and National Financial Secretary, was suspended for six months. The statement read, “The former state chairperson of the party, Pastor (Mrs) Dayo Ekong, is hereby suspended for six months for gross misconduct and breach of the party’s constitution by holding the offices of both state chairperson and national financial secretary simultaneously.”

Additionally, the entire former state executive committee was suspended for six months for alleged anti-party activities and failure to uphold the party’s constitution. “Every member of the former state executive committee is suspended for six months for not upholding the party’s constitution and for engaging in anti-party activities,” Odunaike stated.

Furthermore, all Local Government and Ward Executive Committees established under Ekong’s leadership were dissolved, and their members were suspended for the same period. “All the Local Government and Ward Executive Committees in Lagos State, appointed by the Pastor (Mrs) Dayo Ekong-led executive, are hereby dissolved, and their members suspended for six months for anti-party activities, effective immediately,” the statement concluded.

This move signifies a major shake-up in the Lagos chapter of the Labour Party amidst ongoing internal disputes.
