A prominent conservative cardinal has issued a warning against what he described as “ideological lobbies,” including the so-called “gay lobby,” in the lead-up to the selection of the next Pope.

Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller of Germany, a vocal critic of the late Pope Francis, called for a return to traditional Church teachings and urged that the next pontiff be firmly rooted in doctrine and prepared to resist increasing liberal influences.

In an interview with Italy’s La Stampa newspaper, Cardinal Müller emphasized that the future Pope must possess “solid theological and doctrinal formation” and be prepared to confront what he sees as growing threats of “heresy” and “gender ideology.”

“Doctrine is not the property of the Pope, the bishops, or the faithful,” he said. “It must conform to the word of Jesus. No one can modify it. If Jesus says marriage is between a man and a woman, that doctrine cannot be changed.”

He also criticized efforts to equate marriage with same-sex unions, asserting that such proposals “completely contradict the doctrine of the Bible.”

Cardinal Müller’s remarks come as cardinals from around the world convene in Rome to finalize preparations for the papal conclave, which is set to begin on May 7.

The conclave follows the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away last week at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke and heart failure.
